Aaliyah Mallard’s family history of diabetes has driven her to become the founder of a healthcare platform.
Mallard comes from a family of educators and helpers, and as a result, she knew early on that her path would center on serving others, she told AFROTECH™ in an interview. It was ultimately science that piqued her interest, and she decided to pursue a career in pharmacy. She has worked as a pharmacist for nearly 20 years and is anchored by a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Florida A&M University, which she obtained in 2008, she shared with AFROTECH™. She is based in Atlanta.
“I completed a pharmacy practice residency, which gave me additional clinical training and hands-on experience in more advanced clinical care settings,” she said. “So over the course of my career in hospitals, I’ve worked within HMO systems, I’ve worked in managed care. Today I work in formulary and medication management, where I evaluate therapies at a population level while still understanding how decisions affect individuals or individual patients.”
Halo-RxMeds
Mallard is also the founder of a telehealth platform, Halo-RxMeds, which she developed after making observations as a pharmacist reviewing patients’ eligibility for GLP-1 medications and how they responded to them, according to AFROTECH™. She noted that, beyond blood sugar control, patients reported reduced cravings and lessened joint pain from weight loss after taking the drug. She also said she observed patients were able to lower their blood pressure medications, and some no longer needed insulin.
Additionally, Mallard witnessed her older brother, in his 40s, being hospitalized and then diagnosed with diabetes, which runs in the family. That same year, her other brother had a stroke at 50, which prompted her to become a caregiver, she told AFROTECH™. In November 2025, she launched Halo-RxMeds, a telehealth platform focused on weight management and metabolic health, as well as providing resources to support lifestyle and nutritional modification.
“It was born from the belief that these medications are not magic, but they are a very powerful tool,” Mallard said. “So many people [are] doing everything they can, and they still need help. Especially in Black communities where we’re disproportionately affected by hypertension and obesity, cardiovascular issues, so access and guidance really matter… Halo-RxMeds is my way of helping people live healthier and fuller lives.”
How It Works
To get started on the platform, users must register on the site and complete an initial evaluation to determine eligibility, Mallard shared. If approved, users will participate in a virtual consultation with one of its licensed healthcare providers, who will evaluate if they are a good candidate. Then, if so, the provider will review the information and collaborate with prescribing practitioners to personalize a GLP-1 plan.
“We just provide another set of trained eyes reviewing the regimen and advocating for safe and effective use,” Mallard explained.
The medication is compounded in a pharmacy using the active ingredient found in well-known GLP-1 medications. Because the meds are compounded and not prescribed through a larger pharmaceutical company, they are made available through self-payment and are not able to be processed through insurance, Mallard said. Once payment is made and the medication is compounded, it is then shipped to the patient. This process, from onboarding, eligibility, consultations, and delivery, can take between three and five days, she noted.
Users will also benefit from advanced analytics to track their journey, according to information on the company website. Additionally, there is 24/7 support for users who can seek guidance from its care team.
“We bring a different layer to the patient experience. Many companies in this space are not owned by healthcare professionals,” Mallard said. “Not many, if any at all, are built with pharmacists being involved in ongoing care. Pharmacists are the most accessible and the most trusted healthcare professionals. We understand medications beyond prescribing. We look at interactions, side effects, interactions in the body, regimens, and how regimens affect the person over time. Patients can really benefit from that perspective.”
She added, “We aren’t a transactional company that’s just focused on the prescription. We [want to] stay involved throughout our patients’ journeys. We [want to] help patients manage side effects and feel supported as their health evolves and ultimately hopefully improves.”
