Leaving the U.S. Air Force didn’t end Manny Smith’s service, it redirected it.
Smith attended the U.S. Air Force Academy on a full scholarship and later earned a degree from the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. He spent seven years building satellites and software for the U.S. Air Force and Space Force, where he managed a $2 billion technology portfolio, according to information shared with AFROTECH™.
Smith always understood the importance of education as a first-generation college graduate. He recognized the need to reduce barriers to higher education access and that the solution lay in improving admissions and enrollment efficiency.
In 2019, while on active duty, he founded EdVisorly, an organization that streamlines admissions workflows using AI. Its platform, EddyAI, helps institutions automate tasks like transcript processing and evaluation, transfer credit mapping, and GPA recalculations, according to a press release shared with AFROTECH™. The platform has increased admissions data-processing productivity by more than six times, giving institutions more time to focus on student engagement.
EdVisorly has partnered with more than 100 colleges and universities and served more than 250,000 students, per the release. This includes the University of California, Santa Cruz, which uses EddyAI to improve processing and evaluation of first-year and transfer applications, assess academic requirements, certify General Education requirements, and flag inconsistencies between students’ reports and their official transcripts, according to information shared on LinkedIn.
Series A
EdVisorly has closed a $13.3 million Series A financing round led by Breachway Capital, according to a press release. Participating investors included U.S. News & World Report, Lumina Foundation, Strada Education Foundation, JFF Ventures, Motley Fool Ventures, Juvo Ventures, and Zeal Capital Partners.
The funding will help EdVisorly continue supporting its network of institutional partners, scale the company’s partner success and implementation teams, and support the development of additional tools and services, according to the press release.
“From day one, EdVisorly has been built on the belief that college and university enrollment teams play a critical role in the lives of students. As the front door to social and economic opportunity for millions of students, our partner institutions are shaping the future of our communities, one decision at a time,” Smith said in a press release. “They deserve an innovative and values-aligned partner dedicated to driving long-term success. This Series A is EdVisorly’s commitment to our institutional partners that we’re going to keep building to elevate access, outcomes, and opportunity for the next generation of students.”
