The long-awaited Obama Presidential Center will officially open to the public on June 19, 2026 — Juneteenth — on Chicago’s South Side.
In a press release on Saturday, March 7, the Obama Foundation announced that the center’s dedication will take place on Thursday, June 18, with the campus opening to visitors the following day.
Celebrations will run through June 21 with “a series of events that bring together the changemakers, community members, volunteers, and supporters who made the Obama presidency a reality and welcome visitors to celebrate the power of hope and change,” the Foundation said in the release.
What Is The Obama Presidential Center?
As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the Obama Presidential Center — first announced in 2015 — is an $800 million museum and public gathering space honoring former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. Once completed, it will be the most expensive presidential center in the nation’s history.
The 19-acre campus will tell the story of the Obamas’ journey from community organizers in Chicago’s South Side to becoming national and global leaders, while creating opportunities for local residents to connect, learn, and engage.
“When the Obama Presidential Center opens next year, it will be a hub for change — a place for our @ObamaFoundation leaders and people from all over the world to come together, get inspired, and take what they learn back to their own communities,” Obama shared in an Instagram post on Oct. 18, 2025.
In addition to a museum, the campus will feature a branch of the Chicago Public Library, an athletic facility, a fruit and vegetable garden, outdoor gathering spaces, a café, a retail shop, and more — all designed to immerse and educate visitors through events, exhibits, workshops, films, and community programming, per the foundation’s website.
Initially expected to open in 2021, the project faced significant construction delays due to federal reviews and legal challenges, per the Chicago Sun Times.
“I could not be more excited because I know people here on the South Side of Chicago, and visitors from all around the world are going to be able to use this space in an active way,” Obama said in a video shared by the Foundation.
A Cultural And Economic Boost For Chicago’s South Side
The Obama Presidential Center is also bringing new job opportunities, with more than 150 openings, as AFROTECH™ previously reported. The positions included operating engineer, custodial team lead, security supervisor, and visitor engagement associate.
“Our team is made up of people who are equal parts dreamers and doers. We are people who care as much about how we achieve our goals as we do about the goals themselves. Our values drive our team and are instilled in the work this Foundation does every day,” per the Center’s careers website.
“We are also committed to creating an anti-racist organization in order to do our part to help combat racism and inequity in all forms, in communities across our nation and around the world,” it continues.
The Obama Presidential Center’s opening is expected to bring an economic boost to Chicago while creating a cultural gathering space for the community. Its Juneteenth opening carries additional significance, as the holiday commemorates June 19, 1865 — the day enslaved people in Texas learned they had been freed.

“It is easy to look around right now and feel like the challenges we face are simply too big,” Obama said in a video shared to Instagram. “But hope is not about ignoring the hard stuff. It is that thing inside us that insists something better awaits if we are willing to work for it. Here on the South Side of Chicago, hope is getting a permanent home.”
