Instagram users can have more control over their algorithm. According to ABC News, the social media company announced a new feature, Your Algorithm. Using AI, it will generate a summary of usersâ interests by analyzing their activity. Tessa Lyons, vice president of product at Instagram, told âGood Morning America.â âIf we get it wrong, you can remove those interests from your algorithm,â she said in the interview. The feature can be accessed by navigating to the Reels tab, where users will find an icon shaped like two lines with a heart. They will be presented with a dashboard that shows their interests and can select what they would like to view more or less of, per ABC News. âBeing able to tell us that directly so that we can take action in real time, I think, will improve their Instagram experience,â Lyons said on âGood Morning America.â âThis is one way for you to give us feedback on what youâre seeing on reels that can influence the reels youâre seeing going forward. And I...

In an unexpected twist, following President Donald Trumpâs 2025 inauguration, Instagram and Facebook users began noticing their accounts automatically following official profiles of the new administration, including Vice President JD Vance and First Lady Melania Trump. For many, this raised alarms about their control over their social media accounts and Metaâs evolving relationship with political power. âI Didnât Sign Up for Thisâ: The Backlash According to Yahoo News, social media lit up with frustrated users who claimed their accounts were now following President Trump, Vice President Vance, and First Lady Melania without their consent. The sentiment was clear: users were uneasy, especially as trust in social media platforms continues to be scrutinized. Metaâs Explanation: Procedural or Problematic? Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, quickly responded, attributing the issue to standard procedure. According to the company, users who had previously followed the...

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the authorâs own and not those of AFROTECHâ˘. Last week, the Chinese social app RedNote grew in popularity as a potential TikTok replacement . As TikTok users waited for the Supreme Court to rule on the ban, they quickly migrated to the platform. The app became number one in the Apple App Store, with thousands of American users joining. Users have mistakenly referred to RedNote as the Chinese version of TikTok, but the platform is more akin to Instagram. RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu in China, launched in 2013 as a shopping platform. Like many apps, it serves as a default search engine for content on makeup, fashion, travel, and lifestyle tips. Users can post photos and videos in a similar fashion to Instagram Reels and TikTok. The migration from TikTok to RedNote has become a protest statement in the wake of the U.S. governmentâs ban on TikTok. Initially, calls to ban the app began with President Donald Trump in 2020 before being passed...

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the authorâs own and not those of AFROTECHâ˘. Meta came under fire after users rediscovered AI-generated accounts on Instagram and Facebook with AI-generated photos of Black people. Launched in 2023, these accounts introduced a lineup of celebrity AI characters, featuring the likenesses of Snoop Dogg, Kendall Jenner, MrBeast, and others.  They were created to boost advertisersâ engagement. But since their launch, the accounts hadnât garnered much attention. In the summer of 2024, Meta scrapped the celebrity AI accounts, leaving the non-celebrities up and allowing Meta users to create their own AI characters. But now that AI has become a hot-button topic as we enter 2025, Meta has expressed an interest in integrating user-generated AI profiles into its social media platforms. In December, during an interview with the Financial Times, Meta executive Connor Hayes stated, âWe expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind...

Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta âthe company that owns Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook, which collectively have a combined daily active user base of 3.3 billionâwill be implementing sweeping changes to content moderation. The announcement was made via a Reel on Zuckerbergâs Instagram . Anyone on the internet knows that, over the last five years, content has often taken precedence over real connection. Considering the incoming presidential administration and the immense influence platforms like Facebook and Instagram have on what content is seen or suppressed, itâs unsurprising that Meta is overhauling its approach ahead of this political transition. This is especially relevant given the strained relationship Donald Trump has had with social media companies like Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter) over the years. Content moderation has become a highly polarizing issue in the United States, especially due to the political nature of our cultural spaces and the increasing...

Druski has the content creation game on lock. As previously reported by AFROTECHâ˘, the Maryland nativeâs foray into comedy dates back to skits he shared on Instagram under the handle druski2funny. According to Forbes, he was known for his humor as the class clown at an early age, though it wasnât always to the amusement of his teachers and parents. âI think just being a class clown early on thatâs what kind of grooved me in my career,â he told Forbes. âSometimes when youâre young you really donât know what your purpose is. But thankfully I have good parenting, so now we figured it out in the midst of all the craziness, but they donât always support being a c lass clown while in school and being young. I had to figure it all out later in life. I came back to it, and I was like âAll right this is my purpose.'â Before his big break, Druski faced various challenges, leading him to work different jobs â some he was fired from, others he quit. He considered pursuing higher education and...

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri explains why some content on the platform is being suppressed. In response to a user who inquired if the quality of their Stories was being compressed over time since it appeared blurry in Instagramâs highlight feature, Mosseri reveals there is truth to that statement. He also adds that the quality of a video, Reel, or photo could also be impacted depending on a couple factors, including its performance. âIn general, we want to show the highest-quality video we can when someone is watching a Story or a Reel or a photo. If something isnât watched for a long time, âcause the vast majority of views are in the beginning, we will move to a lower-quality video and then if itâs watched again a lot, then we will re-render the higher-quality video,â Mosseri explained in an Instagram video, according to The Verge. âWe also, if we are serving a video to someone on a slow internet connection, weâll serve a lower-quality video, so that it will load quickly as...
